The Paramecium is a freshwater protozoa with all its organs contained within a single cell. Size-wise they are up to 300um in length and 50um wide. It is our smallest live food organism and they use cilia to move through water to feed off bacteria and microalgae.
It is a low trophic organism that help forms the basis of many food webs. In the natural environment and aquaria Paramecia can play an important part in nutrient recycling and waste control to aid water quality. It can be introduced to both aquariums and ponds to boost natural diversity and available from ZM throughout the Year.
As an early livefood Paramecia can provide important enzymes and nutrients to filter feeders, larval fish, and shrimp. Their inclusion in a diet will aid the development of digestive systems, boost early growth, and potentially improve overall health and immune system.
These Paramecia caudata cultures are ideal for growing your own freshwater infusoria; these are suitable for first feeding the very smallest of fry including zebrafish and other danios, tetras, killifish, and Siamese fighters. Paramecia can be reared on a wide range of feeds including Roti Rich, straw infusions, or boiled wheat grains. Paramecia can be harvested by concentrating them with micron filter paper or strainers with a mesh of up to 10um.
ZM Paramecia are grown under controlled biosecure conditions making them ideal for laboratory use. Regularly screened by IDEXX BioAnalysis to confirm the absence of contamination.
